Why do celebrities use stage names?
Some performers want a name that is short and easy to remember. Others want to separate their public life from their private one, or to stand out in a crowded industry. Many simply grew up with a nickname that stuck, like Drake, who uses his middle name, or Rihanna, who uses hers.
- To be easier to remember and spell
- To keep their family name private
- Because a nickname became famous first
- Because another performer already had the same name
Stage names in K-pop
In K-pop, stage names are part of the culture. Idols often debut under a short name chosen with their agency, such as V or RM in BTS, while keeping their Korean birth name for legal documents. Fans usually know both.
Stage names in sport
Brazilian football has a long tradition of single-name players. Edson Arantes do Nascimento became Pele, and Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite became Kaka. Some athletes also changed their names for personal or religious reasons, as Muhammad Ali did in 1964.
